Setting sail from San Juan
Founded by the Spanish in 1521, Puerto Rico's capital is the second oldest European settlement in the Americas. Modern San Juan is a bustling city, home to over a third of the island's population, but the cobbled streets of the Old Town remain the biggest tourist draw. The colonial-era fortifications have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, crowned by the imposing waterfront El Morro fortress, and the Old Town is full of attractive, brightly coloured houses. Outside of the Old Town you can find designer shopping on Avenida Ashford, and the north of the city is fringed by beautiful beaches, including fashionable Condado with its hip hotels and bars.
Our tip
Hunt out the very best chuletas Can-Can and pastelillos – local food at its best is great. Don’t settle for sorry imitations.

Dominican Republic: Samaná
The Samaná Peninsula provides a different perspective on the Dominican Republic to the overdeveloped east coast, offering both unspoilt natural beauty and glimpses of everyday life. Between January and March the bay is a popular location for spotting humpback whales, while the town of Las Terrenas is known for its sophisticated nightlife.

Turks and Caicos Islands: Grand Turk
Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks and Caicos, a collection of sleepy and spectacularly beautiful coral islands to the east of the Bahamas. The pristine white sands and turquoise waters are the main attraction, and the extensive barrier reef makes this a popular destination for divers in the know.

Bahamas: Great Exuma
Great Exuma is the largest of the 300 scattered islands and cays known collectively as the Exumas, and it’s a fantastic spot for diving, snorkelling or simply relaxing on the beautiful beaches. The island’s tiny capital, George Town, lies directly on the Tropic of Cancer.

Bahamas: Rose Island
Rose Island is pure Bahamian bliss, with 11 miles of secluded coves, deserted white sands and laid-back beach bars, along with some fantastic snorkelling spots. Just 25 minutes by boat from Nassau and the mega-resorts of Paradise Island, this feels like another world entirely.

Arriving in West Palm Beach
Palm Beach is the third richest city in the USA, a billionaire's playground that has gained notoriety of late as the home of Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump's exclusive resort and private member's club. With its golden sands, balmy climate and glitzy boutiques, it's not hard to see why this city has been attracting the rich and the famous for over a hundred years. Palm Beach is built on a barrier island connected by bridges to the Florida mainland, where you'll find the cruise port and the grittier sister city of West Palm Beach.

What we love
This has to be one of our favourite travel experiences. We love the al fresco feel, dining outside for all meals if you wish, and even spending the night sleeping under the stars on the Balinese dream beds. The totally laid back style means SeaDream is the ultimate chill.

Where to stay in Puerto Rico
If you want to stay in San Juan itself, El Convento is definitely the nicest choice. For resort hotels, we love the Ritz Carlton Reserve at Dorado Beach.
Explore Puerto Rico
In the El Yunque rainforest you will find the habitat of Puerto Rico's endangered wildlife - not to mention beautiful views.
