Setting sail from Naples
Naples has a reputation as a rough and ready sort of place, but there's an undeniable vitality to the city, perhaps as a result of living in the shadow of dormant Mount Vesuvius. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed city centre rewards exploration, and in addition to the many cultural treasures waiting to be unearthed Neapolitans are rightly proud of their food; this is where you'll find the best pizza in Italy. The city also acts as a gateway to the fascinating remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the beautiful Amalfi coast, and the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida.
Our tip
If you are a brave driver, hire a car to tour the region; there are so many places to visit within easy reach, though this is not an experience for the faint-hearted!

17 September
France: Bonifacio
Bonifacio sits atop brilliant white limestone cliffs on the southern tip of Corsica, with the harbour down below filled with fishing boats and glitzy yachts. The town's history as a Genoese stronghold, along with its proximity to Sardinia, means that the Italian influence is strong here.

Italy: Alghero
The Sardinian city of Alghero is home to one of the loveliest old towns in the Mediterranean, with its cobbled lanes, elegant churches and golden sandstone architecture. The city was ruled for some 300 years by the Crown of Aragon and retains a uniquely Hispanic feel, with a dialect of Catalan still spoken by some locals.
19 September
France: Ajaccio
The attractive, oceanfront capital of Corsica was the birthplace of the island’s most famous son, Napoleon Bonaparte. You can find out more about the emperor at his childhood home, the Maison Bonaparte, which is now a museum.

Italy: Porto Cervo
Created in the 1950s and ‘60s by a group of investors including the Aga Khan, the resort of Porto Cervo was conceived as the perfect Mediterranean village, drawing on architectural influences from Spain, Italy, Greece and North Africa. It’s a glitzy retreat for the international jet set, at the heart of Sardinia’s glorious Costa Smeralda.
21 September
Italy: Ponza
Ponza is the largest of the Pontine islands, situated out in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west of Naples. Sometimes described as a more authentic alternative to Capri, the island is notable for its natural beauty and Neapolitan-influenced cuisine, and has a reputation as a hideaway for the rich and famous.

What to do in Naples
The short journey to Vesuvius, and its victims Pompeii and Herculaneum, is truly memorable.
