From the warren-like medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic to the fantastical modernist architecture of Antoni Gaudí, from the dizzy heights of Mount Tibidabo to the golden sands of Barceloneta, there's never a dull moment in this most beguiling of cities. Take a stroll along the Ramblas, soak up the wonderful art of Picasso and Miró, or experience the electrifying atmosphere of a match at the Camp Nou. Barcelona is truly a city with something for everyone.
Our tip
For the ultimate boozy lunch head to Can Paixano, also known as La Xampanyeria, where local residents, office workers and the odd adventurous tourist crowd around the bar and tuck into sandwiches washed down with Cava.

Gibraltar: Gibraltar
Sovereignty of ‘The Rock’ has been a thorny issue ever since Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in 1713, though on the ground it’s clear where most locals’ sympathies lie. Gibraltar is often described as ‘more British than Britain’, a curious enclave of red postboxes, double decker buses and chip shops.

After years of neglect, Tangier is finally being restored to its former glory as a cosmopolitan crossroads between Europe and Africa. The Moroccan government has invested heavily in modern infrastructure, while the spruced up medina shines with a new-found cultural dynamism.

Canary Islands: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Said to have the world's most perfect climate, cosmopolitan Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and the largest city in the Canary Islands. The charming old quarter, La Vegueta, is where you'll find the city's most interesting colonial architecture, while beach fans should head for lovely Playa de las Canteras.

Cape Verde: Praia
Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, set on the south coast of Santiago island. Highlights include a scattering of attractive Portuguese colonial architecture around the Praca Alexandre Albuquerque, while the lively fruit and vegetable market will give you a taste of local life at street level.

Arriving in Tema (Accra)
Ghana's capital city Accra is located on the Atlantic Ocean, where Europeans arrived to establish a trading hub on what was known as the Gold Coast. Precious metals were soon superseded by slaves, and visitors can get a flavour of the remnants of this grim practice in the former slave prisons and museums. Now a busy, dusty city where 17th century architectural remains can be seen alongside modern skyscrapers and vibrant markets, Accra is interesting but not inviting. To see Ghanaian life in the raw, visit Makola Market, and see the colonial architecture alongside modern developments including the vast concrete Independence Square.
Don't miss
Jamestown is the oldest part of Accra and remains a bustling fishing centre. Be there in the early morning to see the small boats bring in the day’s catch.

If you have to stay here, go for the Movenpick or the Labadi Beach. To be honest it’s not a city in which to linger.
